Tasting Notes

Nose     –   The herbs are very up front with this one. Peppermint, pine and pleasant grassy notes. Cucumber and melon round out the nose.

Palate   –  All the notes on the nose swim effortlessly through the palate, the mint developing sweeter notes as it goes on. Citrus zest also pops in to say hi.

Finish  –  A waft of smoke appears during the long finish.

Our Coments

From the Hakushu distillery in the foothills of Mount Kaikomagatake comes their Distiller’s Reserve single malt whisky, a no-age-statement expression, that captures the smoky, herbaceous characteristics of their whiskies. Both lightly-peated and heavily-peated malts were used for this complex and deeply enjoyable whisky. One of two Spring 2014 release from Suntory.

Tasting Notes

Nose     –   Toasted barley, seed & nut loaf, chopped almonds and a little bit of barrel char. Hints of milk chocolate and dried grass bring sweetness.

Palate   –  Much more fruit on the palate, but it’s but no means a sweet whisky. Still rich, herbaceous and grassy, with a waft of smoke along the way.

Finish  –  Quite short, though enjoyable with orange peel and a touch of minerals.

Our Coments

Nose     –   Tobacco. Peat Smoke. It’s quite savory. grapes. Red apple. Cumin. Coffee. Chocolate. I’m suspecting Oloroso sherry here. Husk. Citrus. Ripe oranges. Soft dates. Clove. Now I’m pretty sure it’s Oloroso. Burnt toast. It’s quite a robust nose. Very controlled and on point.

Palate   –  Sweeter than the nose. Honey, Citrus, Cinnamon, Those apples again. Mint. Very juicy and velvety delivery. The clove is back too.

Finish  –  So long. Amazingly long. Oily. Clove. Cinnamon. Mint. Oak

Our Coments

From Suntory’s mountain distillery, nestled deep in the forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake, Hakushu is the herbal and gently smoky single malt. Straight from the untouched forests, mountains, and pure waters of the Southern Japanese Alps, it is no wonder that Hakushu is a “green and fresh” whisky, praised by the most curious whisky connoisseurs and lovers of gastronomy. Its crisp and vibrant feel, unique in a single malt, enlivens and liberates your senses.
Suntory The Hakushu 18 Year Old Single Malt Whisky has been aged for 18 years, which is slightly longer than the average for Japanese whiskies. This age is associated with the youngest part of the whiskey, some components may be far older.
The Japanese began their whisky journey trying to replicate the scotch style. Their result was a marrying of the two styles that produces whiskies like Suntory The Hakushu 18 Year Old Single Malt Whisky that exhibit smoky and floral accents.
