Tasting Notes

Nose     –   Classic Yamazaki strawberries and dried fruits with floral notes coming from the Mizunara cask whisky. Fragrant sandalwood and maybe coconut. Certainly a whisky where you could get lost in its nose.

Palate   –  The dried berries remain lively on the palate (it even develops some raspberry.notes along the way), but they’re dialled back a bit to make room for light oak, white peach and a small amount of spice.

Finish  –  Vanilla lasts and lasts, with spicy but sweet cinnamon acting as a final flourish

Our Coments

Released in Spring 2014, this is one of two Distiller’s Reserve single malt whiskies from Suntory in Japan. This single malt from the Yamazaki distillery is jam-packed with superb red berry notes, gained from the whisky being matured in Bordeaux wine casks and Sherry casks. It also features malt matured in Mizunara casks, adding subtle fragrant oak notes.

Our Coments

Yamazaki is the first Japanese distillery established 1923. The distillery is situated in the vale of Yamazaki, an area of dense bamboo grooves at the foot of Mt.Tennozan outside Kyoto, Japan’s ancient capital and stronghold of traditional Japanese culture. The spiced wood arrives first then dried cranberries with a lasting muddle of orange marmalade and honey sweetness.

Tasting Notes

Nose     –   Quite thick and resinous, there is a pleasant oiliness with zesty citrus and peels and a hint of sherry. Plenty of oak and orchard fruits.

Palate   –  Midium-body with green notes and an earthen note, plenty of wood resin and a floral character with zest and sherried peels

Finish  –  Good length with fruit and zest.

Our Coments

Yamazaki 18 is the multi award winning whisky. It is proudly awarded SWSC Double Gold Medal in 2005, IWSC Trophy in 2006 and ISC Gold in 2007. This one was matured in sherry casks. The nose is very woody, in a nice way, with some varnish, turpentine. A beautiful balance. Some very soft
tannins… Extremely oaky but masterfully crafted. The mouth is superbly balanced, with lots of orange juice and spices. Creamy yet nervous, with all sorts of fruit syrups and jams. Besides, the finish is very long.

Yamazaki Shery Cask Non-Chill Filtered

  • Name: Yamasaki Shery Cask Non-Chill Filtered
  • Company: Suntory
  • Category: Blended Whiskey
  • Content: 48% ABV
  • Volume: 700ml
  • Price: 120,000

Tasting Notes

Nose     –   Heavy, fruity and with plenty of immediate wood spice. There are a combination of rich aromas present – burnt caramel, rich dark dried fruits (think of prunes, raisins and dates), molasses, black treacle and bitter orange peel. There are hints of peaches, almonds, menthol, clove and dark chocolate.

Palate   –  This does not feel quite as heavy as the aromas on the nose suggested. It is a big whisky and there are plenty of sweeter notes up front including muscovado sugar, black treacle and dark dried fruits (especially the prunes
and raisins from the nose, although they have a ‘rum soaked’ feel now). In addition, complexity and depth is added by a combination of bitter,
spicy and drying notes – imagine candied oranges, mace, cinnamon and cloves. There are also further hints of coffee grounds, dried peaches, gingerbread, high cocoa chocolate and an increasing note of dried walnut.

Finish  –  A little shorter than expected given the richness of the whisky, especially once the sweet elements fade. This seems to happen quickly to leave a very savoury, dry and slightly bitter feeling. The notes that linger longest are of dark chocolate, dried walnuts, cocoa powder, molasses and cinnamon.

Our Coments

A wonderfully full bodied malt from Yamazaki. This was aged in first fill Oloroso sherry butts for around 12 to 15 years. A limited release of 16,000 bottles. This single malt is the 2010 release from Yamazaki’s annual Cask Collection. Aged solely in sherry casks, this bottle does not have an age statement. Hugely popular and carrying many awards for previous releases, this addition is sure to be a big hit too.

Our Coments

Suntory has won more international awards for its whiskies than any other Japanese whisky maker for good reason. The Yamazaki is one of its best whiskies, rising to international prominence in 2013, when Jim Murray named it the best whisky in the world. The following year, it performed even
better by winning the international whisky awards, putting the finest Scotch whiskies to shame. This special limited edition, with sweet, smooth, and complex flavours is the perfect gift item.

Palate   –  Peppery coating, custard and gum-ish. Pretty good oak fragrant initially but also with hints of new oak lingers at the back a slight turn off balance, but lacking.

Finish  –  Medium, easy, a bit too easy and simple for the price tag. Some treacle, hot spice, vanilla.
