Brancaia’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark and thickly concentrated wine with plenty of black fruit, spice, tar and campfire ash. This was a scorching hot and dry year, and this wine reminds you of this fact thanks to its concentration and thick density. There is some sweetness here, in the form of blackberry syrup and crème de cassis, and the wine’s structure is apparent. Everything is enhanced and enlarged in this vintage. Although the score is similar, this wine is very different in character to the 2016 vintage. I’ve given this wine a shorter drinking window as well. Open it soon with some lamb and stuffed black olives. Some 20,000 bottles were made.
With the 2019 vintage, all of Brancaia’s wines are certified organic. To celebrate their 20th anniversary as vintners in Maremma (this estate owns vineyards in both Coastal Tuscany and in Chianti Classico), Brancaia will be releasing 900 cases of a 2015 Ilatraia Special Edition (packaged in a wooden box).
